One step closer to more jobless benefits

The Senate on Tuesday finally began considering a bill to extend unemployment benefits by up to 20 weeks.

President-elect Barack Obama took his campaign for an economic rescue plan to the public Thursday, calling on Congress to pass a bill in the next few weeks, warning that a failure to do so would have devastating long-term consequences for the nation. The dollar weakened against major currencies Thursday as the pound got a lift from the Bank of England's rate cut and investors considered bleak economic news from Europe. The Bank of England lowered its key interest rate by half a percentage point to 1.5% Thursday, the lowest rate in the bank's 315-year history. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Tuesday he expects a wave of banks to return government bailout money to taxpayers soon.



With a growing number of homebuyers depending on government-insured loans, the Obama administration is taking steps to shore up the Federal Housing Administration program.
